Value Scale

A quick visual reference for understanding and comparing values.

A fast value reference you can use while you’re learning or painting.

The Value Scale shows a clear, numbered range from light to dark. It helps you quickly check what a “value 4” or “value 7” actually looks like, without guessing.

You can also switch the scale onto a light, mid-grey, or black background. This makes one big point obvious: a value can look different depending on what’s around it.

That simple background toggle helps you train your eye for real-world situations — where the same paint stroke can look lighter or darker just because the surrounding area changes.

Use it during workshops, critiques, or studio practice to stay consistent with value language, and to make value decisions with more confidence.

Why artists use it

Quickly match a value number to what you actually see
Train your eye to judge light and dark more accurately
See how surrounding tones change what a value looks like (light / mid-grey / black background)
Make cleaner value groupings: lights, mid-tones, and darks
Helps you spot value mistakes early, before you overwork a painting
Supports clearer feedback in classes and critiques (“it’s around a 4”)

Don't miss a thing!
